CBC AGM 2019 - Donna & Emily tell their stories.
On Wednesday 17th July 2019, Charles Burrell Centre held its Annual General Meeting. AGMs can sometimes be a rather dull affair - presentation of accounts, auditors, rule changes and the like. But, at CBC we like to focus on the impact that we're having in the local community which is why this year, we invited two of our Full Steam Ahead participants to come and tell us about how they got involved and what a difference CBC has made to them. Their stories were inspirational so we wanted to share their words with you here:
"Hello, my name is Donna. I came to CBC after being referred to Full Steam Ahead by the Job Centre. When I first joined Full Steam Ahead I was helping in the kitchen or better known as the Engine Room. I received an opportunity to get my food hygiene certificate and I also gained self confidence and made some great friends. I attended an Emergency First Aid at work course and I am waiting to attend a managerial skills course in August. Since May I have been running the Forge pop-up garden centre and I have been able to meet new people alongside selling plants and pots. Before coming to Full Steam Ahead I was not very confident as I suffer with depression and anxiety but since coming here I have broken my anxiety and come out of my shell a lot thanks to great support from Lyn and Julie. Being with Full Steam Ahead gives you great opportunities at bettering yourself and work skills, for example, I like trying new things and learning so I was given a chance at some reception work at Camvac. I had two days training before working on my own. Whilst I was working independently I was offered a zero-hour contract. It may not seem much, but everything starts somewhere and I wouldn’t have gotten anything if it wasn’t for the help and right guidance from Full Steam Ahead. So from this experience I hope to continue with Full Steam Ahead and get further support to get a full time job".
"Hi I’m Emily and I have been volunteering at CBC since January – I am based with Lyn and Julie on the Full Steam Ahead project. I found Full Steam Ahead on Facebook. There are a few people with disabilities involved with CBC including myself as I am deaf. Since being here I have not been discriminated nor have I felt out of place. I have not been as comfortable in an environment as I am here. Since being with Full Steam Ahead I have achieved and overcome a lot, for example, I usually work in the Engine Room and have overcome being shy and quiet and am now a lot more confident in dealing with customers and opening the café. Being with Full Steam Ahead I have made some good friends and enjoyed working in a team. I have also been able to cover the housekeeping role during staff absence. I have gained my Emergency First Aid at work, manual handling and Food hygiene qualifications which will help me in the future to gain a job. The Full Steam Ahead project Manager, Lyn, helps us with CV’s and cover letters and this means that we don’t leave any details out. My overall experience of working with Full Steam Ahead is that I am confident enough that when I’m ready I can go into a full time job and will take with me all I have learnt and gained by working with a great team"
