The Charles Burrell Centre came first in the ‘Most Enterprising Organization’ category thanks to its work transforming the former High School into a multi-purpose hub providing a home for more than 40 permanent tenants and dozens of regular weekly bookings.

‘Locality’ supports community organisations to be strong and successful. They have more than 600 members UK wide which benefit from specialist advice, peer learning and campaigning support.

A community and business centre in Thetford has welcomed the creation of a new nature area on its site, constructed by a team of young people working through the Princes Trust.

The new nature area has been created at the Charles Burrell Centre at the rear of what used to be the school playing field in a row of trees. Young people involved in the Thetford Princes Trust scheme undertook fundraising activities including a tombola in the Town Centre, to raise the necessary funds to construct a trail through the trees. They also created a new bug hotel, hedgehog house and bird boxes.

Nature Trail in Community Centre by The Princes trust

Tenants and other users of the site, including children from Jelly Tots Nursery and Thetford Toy Library will be able to take children to visit the new nature area and complete the trail, noting animals and birds along the way.

Terry Jermy, Chief Executive of Charles Burrell Centre said; “We’re so grateful to the young people from the Princes Trust for turning an unused part of our site into something that both benefits wildlife and creates a fun and informative activity for children using the Centre”.

Jacob Charles, Team Leader for Inspire Suffolk who deliver the Princes Trust in Thetford said: "Before the team started, the area at the bottom of the field was known as a bit of a waste land. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and energy of the team to use the area as a blank canvas. The hard work really allowed the team of young people to show their worth based in their community. All the young people on the team were really pleased with the end project. It is a fantastic garden area that is welcoming to all that use the centre. This area is available to all to enjoy!"

A handover ceremony recently took place (4th December 2019) which involved children from Jelly Toys Nursery adding new plants along the trail, with the help of the young people.
